Fragment from the Tomb of John the Fearless and Margaret of Bavaria, Duke and Duchess of Burgundy
Jean de la Huerta Spanish
Antoine Le Moiturier French
This delicately carved fragment comes from the tomb of John the Fearless and Margaret of Bavaria, Duke and Duchess of Burgundy, Dijon, one of the most important sculptural monuments of the middle ages. It belongs to the architectural decoration that surmounts the mourner figures which form the principle decoration of the sides of the tomb. Made originally for the Chartreuse de la Sainte-Trinité de Champmol, the Carthusian monastery on the outskirts of Dijon, the tomb has been reconstructed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon where it is exhibited today.
