Bande de Sureté / Twin City / Nipples (Cardboard)
Robert Rauschenberg American
Not on view
In late 1970 Rauschenberg moved from New York to Captiva, a small island off the Gulf Coast of Florida. This triggered a marked shift in his artistic practice as he began a series using only found corrugated boxes as a material. Referencing both Pop and Minimalism’s use of the box and the cube, these painting-sculpture hybrids also call attention to the global ubiquity of the cardboard container as a carrier of international commodities. Bande de Sureté / Twin City / Nipples (Cardboard) takes its title from the still-visible labels that once indicated their contents.
