Tureen with rocks, flowers, and birds
Not on view
A Chinese-style garden wraps around the curved surfaces of this large bowl and its round cover. With its pair of birds on rocks with peonies on one side and chrysanthemums on the other, it is a type that is known in several examples found in Europe, where it was highly prized in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Its white body and palette of bright clear greens and blues with red and yellow were inspired by Chinese famille verte of the Kangxi era (1662–1722) and characterize the enameled ware traditionally known as Kakiemon porcelain.
