Fragment from a battle scene depicting a foreigner throwing a spear and holding a distinctive shield

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 110

This fragment is a rare example of a Middle Kingdom battle scene and shows a Semitic man with curly hair and a pointed beard hurling a spear. The figure probably stood on top of the fortifications of a walled town that was under siege by the Egyptian army.
