Dancers with Instruments

New Kingdom, Amarna Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 121

This scene takes place as the king's procession, not visible on this block, arrives at the temple. The arrival is met by a man blasting a trumpet and by a group of women who jubilate while one plays a rectangular tambourine. Judging from their long straight hair and simple clothing, these are not court ladies. A young boy accompanies them and probably holds a frond, although it is partly obscured.
