Scarab Inscribed with the Name of Sheshonq I

Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

The hieroglyphs on the underside form the name of Sheshonq I, the first ruler of Dynasty 22 (ca. 945 – 924 B.C.). Above are three signs that form an epithet referring to the sun god Amun. This is an incomplete version of the name, as it is missing hieroglyphs, so this scarab may be a later reissue.
