The Story of Elizabeth (titlepage design)

After Frederick Walker British
ca. 1867
Not on view
This photograph records Walker's drawing on a woodblock for the title-page of "The Story of Elizabeth," later engraved by Swain and published in 1867. A visible horizontal joint-line reflects the fact that wood engravings are printed from small pieces of boxwood, cut across the grain, then bolted together.
