Plate 53, A maenad riding on the back of a centaur and holding a thyrsus, after a painting that was orginally in the House of Vettii in Pompeii (now in the Naples Archaeological Museum). While the majority of the images in the volume relate to Rome, this plate, as well as plates 52 and 54, reproduce panel paintings from Pompeii (near Herculaneum). Below this plate is an untitled image showing figures excavating a site in a landscape with an arch at center. These two images appear after page 86 (which includes the section of text discussing the paintings from Herculaneum and Pompeii) and plate 52. Page 87, which appears after plate 54, includes a description of the maenad and centaur.
