Charles M. Harder

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774

This vessel by Charles Harder, with its graphic, flat design in black and turquoise, typifies in style and technique the popular glaze combination adopted by several artists and art potteries in the 1920s and 30s. It relates to several works in the collection—all made in a similar vein and in the dominant Art Deco style—including examples by Arthur E. Baggs at the Marblehead Pottery (2018.294.5, 2018.294.6), a hippopotamus by Carl Walters (2017.134), and a charger by Harder (2018.294.123).
