Vase

Manufacturer Grueby Faience Company American
Modeler Wilhelmina Post American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774

This vase by Boston’s Grueby Faience Company is an unfinished work. Its unglazed state presents an opportunity to study Grueby’s relief decoration without the heavy glazes characteristic of the pottery’s work. The modeled Cally Lily is most appropriate for this vessel: the attenuated stems emphasize the verticality of the cylindrical form and the foliate elements encircle the flared lip.
