This image of a woman in seventeenth-century costume perched on a heavy chair, and reading as she strokes a dog, comes from a set of six stipple engravings after drawings by Cosway. First published by Smith in 1785, the themes relate to the training of youth--the others titled "Instruction," "Improvement," "Devotion," "Affection," and "Education."
