This is one of three versions of this subject executed by Schiavone, all of them related to Parmigianino's renowned etching of the Entombment (B. XVI.8.5; 27.78.2(291)). Of the three versions this is the closest to the Parmigianino model. An impression of an extensively reworked state (probably the third), after elements of the design, the outlines of the figures and the shading were substantially modified, seemingly in drypoint.
