The Trees, Early Afternoon, France

William A. Harper American, born Canada
ca. 1905
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 761
In this bucolic scene in the French countryside, Canadian-born landscape painter Harper incorporated experimental artistic methods used by French Barbizon painters, Impressionists, and Post-Impressionists. His painterly brushstrokes and dark outlines of tree branches create a sense of on-the-spot immediacy. After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1901, Harper continued his formal education in Paris at the Académie Julian. He later sought training from the leading expatriate painter Henry Ossawa Tanner, who, like Harper, was a Black American artist.
