Lizzy Toby Peters Washoe

Not on view

Lizzy Toby Peters was a contemporary of the basket weaver Datsolalee, whose work is on view nearby. Peters is known for her mastery of traditional Washoe basketry techniques. To ensure consistency in color and texture, Washoe basket weavers harvested different plants at specific times of the year and processed them following distinct protocols. Using such grasses, the artist created boldly graphic containers with geometric designs that expressed both her personal identity and her tribal affiliation.
