Born in rural Ontario, Armington began to paint as a teenager, visited Paris in 1900 to study art, then returned with her artist-husband Frank Armington in 1905. They lived in the city for three decades and both learned to etch. Caroline devoted herself to the medium, chose picturesque French and Belgian subjects, and worked in a style indebted to the Etching Revival. Dated 1909, this view of Notre Dame from the Seine is among the artist’s earliest prints.
