Incense burner with flowers

Attributed to Hu Wenming Chinese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 213

The pattern and form of this incense burner are almost identical to those of one bearing the mark of Hu Wenming’s son, on display nearby. On the basis of this comparison, and the current censer’s evident virtuosity, we can confidently assert that this is at least from Hu Wenming’s workshop, if not from the master’s own hands.
