Not What Was Returned But Could Be Returned – To Represent the County of Buckingham and Bedford

Anonymous, British, 19th century British

This political satire comments on Conservative party politics in a November 1838 election at Bedford, an English county town. Two rival candidates ride donkeys in a ring, one in military uniform holding a brush, the other dressed as a country gentleman, mounted backwards and grasping his mount's tail. Stands behind the riders are filled with spectators, and a poster gives their names--Brabey and Snooks--as well as their standings.
