With wisps of hair framing her face, the artist draws attention to the young girl’s eyes, which are dark and clearly delineated; her gaze, however, is ultimately introspective, rather than penetrating. Although this sitter is unknown, Lacombe typically only made portraits of his family and close friends. This drawing dates from early his career, when the artist first became associated with the Nabis circle, after meeting the painter Paul Sérusier (1864‒1927) in Brittany in 1892.
