Causeway Guard, Suakin, Sudan

Not on view

In this photograph of the Red Sea port of Suakin, Sudan, the distinctive coral architecture of the causeway gate and guardhouse frame a shimmering sliver of water beyond. Made by an unknown photographer affiliated with the British army stationed in the city between 1883 and 1885 during the colonial Mahdist War – a conflict between British-backed Egyptian rule and Mahdist Sudanese – it is at once a travel view and military document.
