Design for a shawl from the 1844 Industrial Exhibition

Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains a design for a shawl presented at the 1844 Industrial Exhibition (l'exposition de l'industrie), made up of vertical garlands with stylized exotic flowers and scrolling leaves, separated by thinner undulating garlands with semi-abstract flowers and leaves, framed by two thin stripes with strips of small, stylized leaves, and bordered above by a horizontal garland of scrolling, stylized leaves with offsetting rosettes. The style of the design was likely inspired on Indian calicoes and must have been intended for a printed calico or other printed textile, likely to be executed with lively colors. According to the inscription, the shawl after which this plate was designed was made by the Fabrique Gagnon et Coulhat.
