Studies of a Bearded Head and a Greek or Roman Coin
Eugène Delacroix French
Not on view
This sheet unites two kinds of sculptural objects—a bearded head sketched from three perspectives and a janiform head from an ancient Greek coin. A similar two-faced head appears among an array of antique coins Delacroix featured in a series of lithographs of 1824–25. By attending to the specificity of their worn surfaces, he rendered the low relief in flattened tonal planes. He took an analogous approach with the simplified profile in the lower part of this drawing.
