Basket tray

This finely stitched hand-coiled tray features alternating rows of Cattail, Willow Shoots, and Devil’s Claw, all natural plant materials that are harvested seasonally in the Western and Southwestern United States and Mexico by Indigenous women. Beginning at center, the darkened coils of Devil’s Claw radiate outward in alignment with the four directions and the cosmos, thereby aligning the body of the artist and also those who use this work for carrying, storing, ceremonial or other daily purposes. Checkered dark and light alternating squares provide movement and accentuate a star, likely the sun, or desert flower design.
