Robert de Forest was president of the Metropolitan Museum's Board of Trustees from 1913 to 1931. In 1922 he and his wife Emily Johnston de Forest announced a gift to the Metropolitan of an American Wing, consisting of sixteen period rooms and three exhibition galleries which opened two years later. Presumably de Forest sat for his likeness by Johansen, a respected painter of society portraits.
