"Parts Knit"

Designer Issey Miyake Japanese

Not on view

From his debut collection in 1971, Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake’s work has revolved around textiles and technique, with a particular emphasis on developing new materials and methods of manufacture that synthesize formal and conceptual concerns into highly inventive garments. With this playful sweater titled "Parts Knit,"Miyake "deconstructs" the traditional form of a turtleneck sweater through the introduction of a third arm. This alien appendage straddles functional and theoretical considerations. The additional sleeve introduces several aesthetic possibilities for the wearer, providing a trio of bi-colored faces to choose from.
