Untitled (Cowboy)
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Richard Prince grew up in the golden age of television and magazine culture. In 1977, he began to rephotograph printed magazine advertisements, especially for Marlboro cigarettes. Prince’s work examines how mediated images explicitly and subliminally influence modern society. He has frequently commented that the photographs he "stole" from the advertisements, often lone-cowboy images, were too good to be true. With one snap of the shutter, Prince lassoed them for his own purposes. Alongside Cindy Sherman and other New York–based artists, he created many of the foundational works of conceptual photography, helping launch the so-called Pictures Generation.
