Flameng’s design on this trade card signals the roles of Rembrandt and Dürer as idols for nineteenth-century French printmakers. In the portrait medallions framing the composition, Rembrandt appears at left as the exemplar of etching opposite Dürer, the model for engraving. Charles Delâtre’s career as a printer was short-lived. However, his brother Auguste Delâtre, who also used this design as letterhead, was integral to the revival of etching in France as the primary printer for the Parisian Société des Aquafortistes (Society of Etchers).
