Company Officer Receiving a Nobleman

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 693

An unknown British officer, who was probably the patron of the work, is seated at the center of this scene receiving two guests who sit across from him. Attendants surround behind and in front of the figures, who are seated on chairs on a raised white marble audience chamber. This tableau lends insight into the hierarchies of colonial India by an anonymous artist who has a great feel for ceremony and social strata at court.
