Maharana Jagat Singh in a Lake Palace Garden
Not on view
Jagat Singh is seen taking pleasure in the palace he built on a man-made island in Pichola Lake at Udaipur. The suite of scenes opens on the upper register with the arrival of the maharana and his entourage. In the next vignette, Jagat Singh, seated on a floral-patterned carpet beneath a textile canopy, relaxes in a courtyard garden, where a variety of trees, flowering plants, and fountains creates a cool and fragrant atmosphere. He smokes a hookah as an ensemble of musicians, singers, and dancers—all women—perform for his enjoyment. Finally, in a display of his archery skills, he is shown standing at a balcony shooting leaping fish. The lake waters, painted in tin to give the appearance of silver, have tarnished to a dark gray.
