A stable of Parisian entertainment since the eighteenth century, Pierrot surged in popularity during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Clédat de Lavigerie worked primarily as a designer of theatrical costume and here shows Pierrot's archetypal attire of loose white blouse and pantaloons, frilled collar, and black skull cap.
