The Horror or Tomb Violated by a Soldier

Anonymous, French, 18th century French
After René Antoine Houasse French

Not on view

This drawing is made on embossed paper, following the composition and scale of an engraving by Etienne Baudet (1638-1711) after a painting by René-Antoine Houasse. The relief-like surface and the trompe-l'oeil frame suggest a market for inexpensive works mimicking the appearance of oil painting.

The subject depicts an ancient warrior visiting a tomb and recoiling in horror or grief at the sight of the bloodied corpse.
