The Attic of La Grangette in Valvins
Edouard Vuillard French
Not on view
Vuillard remained devoted to the subject of the domestic interior throughout his career, often depicting friends and family in the midst of their everyday surroundings. It was during one of his frequent visits to La Grangette, the summer home of Misia and Thadée Natanson, in Valvins, southeast of Paris, that he made this small sketch in graphite and colored pencil. The green lampshade stands out as a focal point in the drawing and casts light on the thick crossed beams of the attic ceiling. The effect becomes even more dramatic in the tenebrist painting he made based on this sketch.
