According to the Bhagavata Purana, the demoness (rakshasa) Putana was sent by Krishna’s evil uncle, the usurper king Kamsa, to kill Krishna. Disguised as a young, beautiful woman Putana tries to kill the infant-God by feeding him poisoned milk from her breasts but Krishna understood her true identity and suckles all life from her.
