Surah Al-Nur (24), Verse 41

Fuad Kouichi Honda Japanese

Not on view

This transcultural composition by a Japanese master of Islamic calligraphy features the Verse of Light (Surah al-Nur) from the Qur'an. It is written in muthanna or mirror image in the thuluth script making for a bold composition on a grand scale. The artist is a master calligrapher of the Ottoman school. This is evident in the precise rendition of the thuluth letters and the symmetry of the composition. In this work Honda uses a distinct mixed media technique like a collage in which the letters are outlined and then painted in and the borders are both painted and air-brushed.
