«In 1776, while America was starting a revolution, the Russians were building the Bolshoi Theater.» The Bolshoi was first created as a private theater under Catherine the Great. Pictured here is the Tsar's Box of the main stage, used as a private viewing area for Tsars, Tsarinas, and their important guests. Four and a half kilograms of gold gild the opulent balconies.
Earlier this week, our Travel with the Met group enjoyed a backstage tour of the Bolshoi and spoke with a dancer who had been training in ballet since he was four. Later that night, we saw him perform in an enthusiastically received performance of Giselle.
