Have you ever wondered where colors come from? Some colors are a mishmash of different shades mixed together!
In this activity, use a coffee filter and water to see how a black is really made up of three different colors. Then, get creative and make a color monster.
Materials
Black washable marker
Coffee filter
Water
Clear cup
Pipe cleaners
Instructions
First, pour a small amount of water into the clear cup.
Draw a thick black circle around the center ring of the coffee filter.
Then, fold the coffee filter in half three times until you get a skinny triangle shape.
Place the tip of the filter into the water. Make sure you don’t get the black circle wet.
Wait until the colors have made their way up to the top edge of the coffee filter. Then, take the coffee filter out of the water and set down on paper towels to dry.
Once dried, you can turn your coffee filter into a color monster using pipe cleaners and tape. Use the colorful shapes as an outline to find your creature’s face and draw it with a black marker.
Reflection
Which color was the “fastest” at finding its way to the edge of the coffee filter? Which was the slowest? Why do you think that might be?
