A View near Tivoli (Morning)

Thomas Cole American
1832
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 759
During an extended trip to Europe from 1829 to 1832, Cole found enjoyment in sketching the Italian countryside. Here, he depicted a scene near Tivoli, a popular retreat from the city of Rome for ancient emperors and nineteenth-century tourists alike. Cole painted the intersection of two Roman aqueducts on the right—the Anio Novus and the Aqua Marcia. A medieval tower was constructed on top, and a modernday bridge extends behind the aqueducts. Avoiding the more popular tourist sites, Cole described this location as “merely a picturesque bit that I found in my rambles.”
