Side Chair
The exact place of origin of both this chair, coded number "I" in a set, and one of the same general type, 10.125.696, has not been determined. The shell on the crest rail is unique. The design and the construction suggest New England origin. The carved ornament reveals motifs employed both in Newport and in New York. In spite of certain New York characteristics, as the knee shells, overall impression conveyed is New England, specifically Newport.
