Like John Sloan, Glackens found his early subject in modern working women. This striking pastel, given to the Metropolitan by the modernist artist, critic, and collector A. E. Gallatin, captures the dynamism of crowded streets, where the mixing of genders, ethnicities, and classes increasingly defined urban life.
