La gran ola, Sète

En las marinas fotográficas de Le Gray abundaban los efectos dramáticos producidos por la luz del sol, las nubes y el agua. Esas imágenes asombraron a sus coetáneos, ya que por aquel entonces era prácticamente imposible conseguir una exposición correcta para el paisaje y el cielo en una misma fotografía. Para resolver el problema, Le Gray imprimía dos negativos sobre una sola hoja de papel, uno de ellos solo del mar, y el otro del cielo. Las dos imágenes podían haber sido tomadas en distintas ocasiones o en diferentes lugares. Las marinas de Le Gray causaron sensación, no solo por su maestría técnica sino por su efecto poético sin precedente en el arte fotográfico.
