Saint Michael and the Dragon

ca. 1405
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 601
A graceful Saint Michael is poised to deal a fatal blow to his monstrous opponent. Originally part of a larger ensemble, this painting was made in Italy by an artist inspired by the richness and refinement of Valencian art. The painter may have been associated with Gherardo Starnina (ca. 1360–1413), an important Florentine artist who worked extensively in Valencia. Despite these close ties to Spanish art, the poplar panel and other aspects of the materials and technique—including the exquisite punchwork, or tooling, in the gold ground—point to an Italian origin.
