Pollaiuolo, escultor, pintor, grabador y orfebre florentino, probablemente preparó este detallado dibujo para el duque Ludovico Sforza de Milán como modelo para una proyectada estatua de bronce del padre del duque, Francesco Sforza. El dibujo perteneció al pintor e historiador del siglo XVI Giorgio Vasari, quien lo describió en su obra Vidas de los artistas (1568), y quizá añadió la aguada marrón oscuro alrededor de las figuras.
