Dish with Cherry Blossoms and Textile Curtains

ca. 1670–90
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 230
With the relocation of the Nabeshima kiln from Iwayagawachi to Ōkawachiyama around the 1660s, the differences in design and quality between commercial Arita ware and the daimyo-sponsored Nabeshima porcelain became more evident, with Nabeshima ware exhibiting greater technical mastery and more refined taste. This example evokes a springtime cherry-viewing picnic. Blue peony sprays painted on the underside suggest that it was made as a tribute piece to the shogun himself. .
