Bamboo and the Thousand-Character Classic
Hailing from Xiuning, Zhan Jingfeng was among a generation of intellectuals who established Anhui as a center of painting and calligraphy during the late Ming dynasty. Here, he has paired a stalk of bamboo with a rendition of the Thousand-Character Classic of calligraphy, a foundational learning text in which no character appears more than once. The latter shows off his distinctive cursive script, which is marked by fluid, twisting lines.
