El polisón, que se puso de moda en la década de 1870, había adquirido su máximo volumen en 1885. Los polisones más exagerados se extendían en un plano casi horizontal a la altura de los riñones y estaban tan guateados y adornados que parecían muebles de salón. Los bromistas los asimilaban a mesas donde se podía colocar un servicio completo para el té. Para soportar el peso de la falda, se ponían almohadillas bajo aros ligeros y flexibles de alambre, mimbre o barba de ballena. Los aros se plegaban cuando las mujeres querían sentarse.
