1870年代开始流行起来的臀垫到1885年时达到了最夸张的程度。在裙摆最极端的时候，它几乎与腰间垂直，看上去里面衬料的大小和装饰程度不亚于当时客厅里的一个膝垫。那时一个流行的玩笑是，这些臀垫的支架可以撑起一整套茶具。为了撑住裙摆的重量，臀垫填料常穿在又轻又柔韧的金属丝、藤条或鲸须之下。就座时需要先改变位置然后将箍环折叠起来。
