Sur cette toile, l’un des premiers chefs-d’œuvre de Willem de Kooning, seules subsistent de fines traces de couleur parmi les formes noires et blanches entrechoquées. Le dynamisme de la composition tient en partie à une figuration novatrice. En effet, l’artiste a effacé, repeint et recombiné des éléments figuratifs en une composition bord-à-bord (allover) qui n’est pas sans rappeler Jackson Pollock. Il faillit intituler le tableau « Intérieur », mais devant les objections de sa femme, il choisit Grenier, « qui est bien un endroit où l’on met de tout ». Pendant l’exécution, il couvrait la toile de papier journal pour éviter que la peinture sèche, acceptant ainsi que les mots et les photos de la page imprimée s’y intègrent.
