デ・クーニングによるこの初期の傑作では、ぶつかり合う黒と白の輪郭のなかに、ほんのわずかな色彩のみが残されています。ダイナミックな構図は、彼の斬新な図形の扱いに一部由来しています。作品では、一度描いた図形的要素を消した後また塗りなおし、再構成しており、全体の構図はジャクソン・ポロックの作品も想起させます。デ・クーニングは当初この作品のタイトルに《インテリア》を考えていましたが、妻が反対したため《屋根裏部屋》と名付けました。「何でも入れて置くところだから」というのがその理由です。この作品の制作中、キャンバスに新聞紙をかぶせて絵具の乾燥を防ぎましたが、その際に転写された活字や写真がそのまま残されています。
