Covered box with peonies
Imperial Ming production of carved red lacquer peaked in the early fifteenth century, and decorative objects from the period were renowned for centuries afterward. The four-character mark on the base of this example reads “made in the Xuande reign [1426–35].” This engraving differs from the standard marks on imperial lacquer wares and was likely a later addition. The box’s meticulous carving and elegant design date to no later than the fifteenth century.
