Memento in book form, with photograph of a child and initials I.C.H
Solid burl wood carved in book form with four raised bands on the spine. The front cover included a recess containing a tintype portrait of a young girl, framed by brass sheet with impressed floral decoration. Both are held in place with the use of a bone frame originally secured with red mastic.The back cover is decorated with inlaid bone motifs of dots, diamonds and an eight-pointed star; the latter, together with two of the four dots are enclosed with the same red mastic. On the spine, a raised center plaque of bone carries the engraved initials I. C. N., filled in red. -- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Lynn Heckman
