Partial copy of Su Shi’s Record of a Night Excursion to the Chengtian Temple (Ji Chengtian si yeyou); Painting after Bada Shanren’s Grapes

Li Jian Chinese
Undated, 1940s
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 216
When it came to providing Wen Fong with models for painting, Li Jian tended to focus on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century artists who painted in loose, splashy styles. The bottom fan follows Bada Shanren, an early Qing-dynasty painter who was particularly beloved during the Republic period for his proto-modern, nearly abstract renditions of birds, flowers, and landscapes.
